Out of the dozen or so 1911s I've had, all but two were God's Caliber. (The other two were .38 Super.)
That said, this one was bought specifically as a gamer gun, and in that role, it's excellent. A big heavy gun like this, with an excellent trigger, in 9MM, is like punching in a cheat code on a video game. Shooting on Easy Mode.
They're not really *that* bad. They're a little bit heavier, a little bit crunchier and need a little bit more travel than the Series 70. They can be tuned up but it's more complex.
Now that most makers have settled on the titanium firing pin, which doesn't have the mass to set off a cartridge, as a way to make a Series 70 drop safe, I'd really rather not mess with the 80. The titanium pin is just a cleaner, simpler solution.
My favorite handgun of all time. My first is a full sized Rock Island 1911 that was shaded dark gray. Single stacked. It was my grandpas favorite type of handgun as well. Absolutely beautiful.
In addition to this one, Dad had a GI style RIA many moons ago that was my first exposure to 1911s. (Really started something, there.) Then I had a RIA GI in .38 Super for quite a while. My first experiment with a sub-caliber 1911.
Since I’m often in a graphical mood, I’m envisioning a chart with the x-axis showing “timing of consequences,” & the y-axis showing “severity of consequences.” No handwashing would be in the top right corner of this graph. Poor firearms safety habits would be in the top left hand corner. Please feel free to plot other points.
Did someone say race guns? Nothing like a comped 38SC race gun with a sub 2lb trigger
Great write up. With all due respect, 1911 chambered in 9mm is sacrilegious.
Thanks!

This is also true
I have a 1911 with the series 80 system and I don’t hate it. Maybe ignorance is bliss as I’ve never fired the series 70.
